Manager, Development

JOB SUMMARY: The Development Manager plays a key role in supporting Cancer Support Community’s fundraising, donor engagement, and event operations. This position is responsible for managing and maintaining the donor CRM (Virtuous), ensuring the integrity of donor data, and supporting high-quality stewardship, campaigns, and events. The Development Manager also provides logistical and planning support for CSC’s signature events and organizational gatherings, ensuring that the External Relations team has the tools and coordination needed for successful execution.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and mission-driven. This is a remote role; however, candidates must reside in the Washington, DC–Maryland–Virginia (DMV) area and be available to provide occasional onsite support for events and meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Donor Data Management & CRM Operations (60%)

  • Serve as the primary administrator of CSC’s donor CRM (Virtuous), ensuring timely, accurate, and strategic management of all donor and gift records.
  • Oversee data integrity across the system—creating and maintaining constituent records, applying consistent coding structures, and ensuring accuracy in all gift and constituent information.
  • Process a wide range of contributions (credit card, check, stock, wire, online, DAFs) with efficiency and accuracy, ensuring proper designation and ongoing collaboration with Finance for accurate coding and reconciliation.
  • Generate and personalize acknowledgment letters, ensuring donor recognition is timely and consistent with stewardship strategy.
  • Build dashboards and generate reports to analyze giving trends, segmentation performance, and donor retention and pipeline progress.
  • Work closely with the External Relations team to provide data for fundraising campaigns, appeals, events, and stewardship initiatives.
  • Coordinate donor list pulls and assist with the setup and execution of mailings and email campaigns, including segmentation, personalization, and data accuracy.

Reporting, Forecasting & Strategic Support (10%)

  • Partner with the Vice President, Development and the Executive Vice President, External Relations to support donor forecasting, campaign reporting, and strategic growth projections.
  • Prepare data and analysis for internal planning meetings, executive briefings, and board reporting.
  • Maintain historical data and reports to track campaign performance and year-over-year growth by donor segment.

Event and Donor Engagement Support (20%)

  • Provide planning and logistics support for CSC’s signature events and other organizational gatherings, including donor receptions, cultivation meetings, and community engagement events. What about in person CSC mtgs/all staff or SLT
  • Manage event logistics such as registration coordination, guest communications, and preparation of materials including name tags, signage, and collateral.
  • Assist with a variety of event tasks as needed to ensure smooth execution, including onsite support for set-up, guest services, and breakdown.
  • Facilitate post-event activities including updating donor records, logging follow-ups, and coordinating acknowledgments.
  • Implement timely special stewardship efforts, including personalized outreach, recognition mailings, and holiday campaigns.
  • Act as a resource to internal departments hosting events—facilitating discovery calls, assessing support needs, providing planning guidance, and advising on next steps for successful execution.
  • Conduct check-ins with internal event leads to ensure alignment and readiness throughout the planning process.

Administrative & Team Support (10%)

  • Maintain up-to-date documentation of development processes, gift tracking protocols, and campaign activity.
  • Support preparation for donor meetings, planning sessions, and fundraising initiatives across the Development team.
  • Ensure integrated coordination of donor data, event planning, and outreach activities.

 

Performs other duties as requested by management

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Advanced proficiency in CRM systems (Virtuous preferred) with strong capabilities in data entry, segmentation, tracking, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting fundraising or donor-related events with strong attention to detail and planning.
  • Exceptional organizational, time management, and multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally across teams and with donors.
  • High level of discretion when working with sensitive donor and financial information.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), Zoom platform, and SmartSheets.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience in nonprofit or development operations.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, donor operations, events, or administrative coordination roles.

WORK LOCATION

CSC has offices located in Washington D.C. and offers in-person, hybrid, or fully remote work for this position.
